“Ensō” is a Buddhist symbol that represents enlightenment strength, elegance, the universe, and the void, or “Mu”. Created with a single brushstroke, it allows for no alterations. A meditative practise in letting go of the mind and allowing the body to create.

It’s oft misshapen or unfinished form demonstrates the beauty in imperfection, the art of letting go of expectations. It is a manifestation of the artist at the moment of creation and an acknowledgment of our true selves. the defects and contours that would otherwise hinder the creation of a flawless circle are precisely what make it lovely.

Sit, clear your mind and create. Ink, paper and two minutes of quiet are all you need.

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life”
— Pablo Picasso

I started working with wood again after sitting in a pub with a friend, frustrated after 15 years of office life. “You should start making something again, you’ll be happier,” he said, and he was right. Here I am five years on, happier.

Reviving skills and tools I hadn’t used in years, failing my way towards accomplishment, exploration of the craft has become a meditative exercise, a place where the busyness of the world slips away. The mind quiets and the wood speaks. I try to incorporate that mindfulness into my design with elegant geometries, clean lines, contrasts of material, unconventional form and texture without compromising ergonomics or function. Stylistically blending the warm indulgence of Scandinavian Hygge, the borderline puzzle-box nature of decorative Japanese joinery and an occasional touch of English Arts & Crafts for decorative flourish.

Being a lifelong child (or so I'm told) and now having kids of my own, play has always been a central pillar of my life, and now it’s part of my design too, as I apply my fine furniture ethos to tabletop gaming and a little play to my fine furniture philosophy. I design and create everything myself using only sustainably sourced FSC and PEFC timber and I’m open to customisations and commissions. Fine, gaming or otherwise. If you’re interested I hope you’ll get in touch.

In the meantime, go make something. You’ll be happier.
